In today’s environmentally conscious world, power conservation and carbon reduction issues are ever increasing. Many nations are even beginning to regulate such activities, and certainly such activities would benefit the larger nations most of all. Back in 2004, the Chinese government announced an energy initiative that mapped out a carbon reduction goal as part of the nation’s Five Yea Plan, China’s national guidelines for economic and social development. Under that plan, China hoped to reduce 20% of their per unit GDP energy consumption by the end of 2010. It’s an aggressive plan to be sure, but one that seems to be succeeding so far.

Summary: There can be too much of a good thing, or so goes the old saying. Fortunately, new technology can come to the rescue, at least in certain cases. For example, an industrial enterprise can grow too big for efficient automation control using traditional technology. However, advances in industrial Ethernet can provide a solution, if such techniques as smart remote I/O and peer-to-peer technology are implemented. The result could be better and more flexible control, along with a change in the way Ethernet is used. This white paper discusses the benefits of Smart I/O and Peer-to-Peer Technology.

19” and 23” Monitors for nautical applications with DNV certificate
Date: 3/26/2009

Advantech Launches 19” and 23” Monitors for nautical applications with DNV certificate

The Industrial Automation Group of Advantech introduces the Marine Grade Flat Panel Monitors FPM-8192V, a 19” SXGA TFT LCD with transflective display with an optional Resistive Touchscreen and the FPM-8232V, a 23” UXGA TFT LCD, both with DNV certification, and IEC-60945 & IACS-E10 approval for marine bridge applications.

The scope of the IEC-60945 certification is for equipment installed on and around the bridge of ship or vessel with regard to EMC in particular for equipment which is operated through software menus..
The FPM-8192V accepts up to four common video inputs, including VGA, DVI, S-Video, and Video as well as three stage PiP (picture in picture) with floating and resizable windows. There’s front OSD control with PiP, which is capable of checking multiple inputs such as, navigation/GPS, wind, vibration, and temperature, allowing multiple displays on a single monitor. The FPM-8192V touch screen option supports Windows® 2000/XP/Vista and Linux The transflective Display technology permits a good readability during the day and night, even under strong sun light conditions.
Both, FPM-8192V and FPM-8232V provide a dimming control knob for backlight brightness dimming from nearly 2 ~100% during day or night time. Both monitors are constructed out of marine-grade aluminum with a UV protected coating to ensure reliability even in harsh outdoor conditions. The chassis has ESD grounding protection, the front-panel is IP65. The front access mounting mechanism makes it suitable for marine bridge systems.
Combined with the Advantech fanless Embedded PCs of the UNO series or other third party computers the Marine Displays are suitable for nautical charts and compliant for ECDIS and RADAR applications.
